The Art of… Decorating for Christmas, Simplified
Any holiday can feel overwhelming, especially when you want to decorate your home! Your frame of mind before approaching this task can make all the difference. Pick a time when you’re not rushed. Approaching it with calmness, a little humour and some good music will go a long way. Here are some decorating tricks to beat the stress of the season:
🎄 Start by focusing on one storage box.
Pick one that catches your eye and gently open it.
🎄 Go through each item in the box, decide whether you’d like to keep it.
If you no longer want it, put it aside, ideally put it in an empty box and label it “Donate”. If the item is broken, have a garbage bag close by to toss it out right away.
🎄 Continue going through each Christmas box and repeat the step above.
Take a break when you need it. Stopping to enjoy a warm beverage (or a cold one), or just walking away for a couple of minutes, will give you renewed energy.
🎄 Once you’ve completed going through all the boxes, decide what you’d like to display.
You don’t have to exhibit every single decoration. Choose the ones that you’re attracted to this year. Each year may be different.
🎄 Pick a focal point in your home and start there.
It could be your whole family room, or a small niche in your kitchen. Decorate it with the items you’ve chosen. Stand back. Does it feel like it’s in the right place? If not, move it. The art of placing these items should bring you happiness, peace and calmness. Feel confident in your decisions.
🎄 It’s okay to be a minimalist with your decorations.
You may be surprised how different you feel when you display only the items you love.
🎄 It’s time to put them away.
Purchasing red or green storage bins to store your Christmas decorations will ensure you know which boxes to take out next year. Or buy sturdy, clear containers so you can see the contents. Either way, place a simple label itemizing what’s in each bin for easy access.
...Christmas doesn’t have to be complicated.
