The Art of… Creating Balance and Harmony in Your Work Space

  • Simplify your space.

Take inventory of the things you have in your work space.  If you have a couple of extra staplers, for example, ask yourself how many you really need.  Continue to eliminate duplicates and things that no longer serve you. Handling an item only once will help make this process go quickly. When picking up an item to decide to keep it or not, ensure that you have a labelled “Donate” box and have a garbage bag close by.

  • Love what you’re looking at.

Once you’ve decided on all the items that you’d like to keep in your work space, place the ones that have great meaning to you, or are the most important, where you can see them. When you take a break from your work, you’ll be looking at something you really love, or something that brings you joy. This helps influence your productivity by giving you a positive feeling.

  • Create flow from the ground up.

Removing boxes, papers and items from the floor will help create a better flow in your space.  Stepping over things when you’re trying to get to your work area will instantly create a negative impact on your day.  When the path is clear and clean, your energy for the day will feel lighter.

  • Assume the power position and Support Your Back.

Place your desk facing the doorway or the entrance of a room. Sit in a high-back chair and have a solid wall or piece of furniture behind you. Place your laptop or computer in a comfortable position on your desk. Using velcro or zip ties to secure your cable wires together will create a neater look. Keep the essential items you need close by, so if you’re looking for your favourite pen or highlighter, you’ll be able to find it quickly. Having an unobstructed desk will allow more room for the things you’re working on at the moment.

  • Display your accolades.

Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates, Professional Memberships, Awards are personal items you can display and highlight behind you. When you’re on a video call, clients and work associates will be able to see your accomplishments. Be proud to show them off.

  • The 10-Minute Rule.

At the end of your work day, put away all the things you’ve been working on.  Think about the day ahead and prioritize the things you need to do.  Making a quick list will allow you the freedom of knowing exactly what needs to be done when you sit at your desk the next day.

And watch how good the new energy flow feels!
